Wal-Mart recalls 380 tons of popular Tyson deli meats U.S. grocery megastore giant Wal-Mart has hit a snag with a popular maker of some of its deli meats and ready-made sandwich offerings, Tyson, as listeria has been discovered in samples of roast-beef. According to The Coastal Source, a meat plant in New York is the source of the meats whose contaminated samples were found during random sample testing in Georgia. The bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes, is the cause of Listeriosis, a condition that causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and can lead to fatal meningitis if it spreads untreated. Wal-Mart’s popular “Marketside Grab and Go” sandwich kits are the most broadly affected by the recall of the deli meats which are produced by nationwide meat manufacturer Tyson, best known for their frozen chicken products. George Department of Agriculture’s Commisioner Tommy Irvin released the following statement summarizing the matter:
We discovered this contamination as part of our routine sampling program. Sampling food products on a regular basis with a scientific protocol is a very important part of the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s efforts to ensure food safety.
