Johns Hopkins moves beyond the Baltimore/Washington D.C. region, with a fully integrated member of Johns Hopkins Medicine in St. Petersburg, FL.

Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) has announced that All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, is now a part of JHHS, and a fully integrated member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). All Children’s Hospital is the first U.S. hospital outside of the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area to become integrated with JHM. JHM includes the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.

“This is a momentous occasion — the beginning of a new chapter in the history of All Children’s Hospital,” said Gary Carnes, president and CEO of All Children’s Health System, in a statement. “Throughout its 84-year history, All Children’s has grown with the needs of children to become a regional referral center for the best in pediatric care. The goal has always been to become a national leader, not only in clinical care, but also in teaching and research to benefit future generations of children in Florida and beyond. As part of Johns Hopkins Medicine, All Children’s value as a key community asset will increase exponentially.”

“We welcome All Children’s to the Hopkins family and we join the leadership of All Children’s in viewing this integration as an opportunity that allows both partners to continue their respective, mission-centric work in children’s health care,” said Edward D. Miller, M.D., dean and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, in a statement on the JHM website. “We also believe that it increases All Children’s value as a key community asset, extending benefits near and beyond to the children in need of top-notch clinical care by adding the advantages that Johns Hopkins Medicine will bring.”

The integration was a non-cash transaction. All Children’s Hospital will retain its name, and donations made to the All Children’s Hospital Foundation will continue to benefit the hospital. Operation and leadership are not expected to change, although the chairman of the board of All Children’s will now be a member of the board of JHM; other All Children’s board members will be given opportunities to serve on JHM and JHHS committees. And, Jonathan Ellen, M.D., former chairman of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, will serve as the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine vice dean for All Children’s Hospital and physician-in-chief at All Children’s.

The University of South Florida and All Children’s Hospital Residency Program will continue until 2014, at which time the program may or may not be continued, pending additional discussions.

All Children’s Hospital is the only hospital on Florida’s West Coast, and one of only two hospitals in the entire state of Florida, devoted completely to the care of children.

“The mission of this private, not-for-profit hospital is rooted in its beginnings in 1926 as Florida’s first Crippled Children’s Hospital for polio victims,” says a statement on the All Children’s website. “All Children’s understands that it’s not enough to treat disease — that true progress comes from teaching and research to cure disease.”

The integration of JHM and All Children’s Hospital took place on Friday, April 1; the formal celebration of the landmark event is today, Apr. 4, in St. Petersburg.
