Excessive heat can cause exhaustion, sickness, even death when not properly dealt with or ignored altogether. During this time of the year in the U.S., it is important to understand the warning signs of heat-related illness, and how to prevent them in the first place. The American Red Cross offers lots of information on dealing with the heat.
Prevention is the best possible solution to heat-related illness. When the weather is warm, it is important to take certain precautionary measures, including:
- Hydrate even if you do not feel thirsty, drinking fluids that do not contain caffeine or alcohol.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing, avoiding dark colors, which absorb the sun’s rays more readily.
- Stay indoors as much as possible.
- Avoid physical activity outdoors, including exercise, during the hottest part of the day.
- If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks.
- Never leave children or pets in a vehicle, even for a short time.
- Check on pets frequently to be sure they are not being adversely affected by the heat.
